A KVM Switch (keyboard, video and mouse) is a hardware device that
allows a user to control multiple computers from one or more sets of
keyboards, video monitors and mice. These switches are often found in
data centers where multiple servers are placed in a single rack. By
pressing a button on the KVM switch, the administrator can change
control from one server to next. These switches also help in saving the
cost of purchasing dedicated keyboards, mouse and monitors. It also
saves space in the server room and limits cable clutter.
When a typical PC is starting up, the operating system will
automatically try to detect the signals of keyboard and mouse just like water sensors.
After confirmation of connectivity, the screen displays the start up
page. As a result the booting of a single PC is dependent on its
keyboard and mouse. For control of multiple PCs, several sets of
keyboards, mouse and monitor is needed. This could be space consuming as
well as costly. KVM switch solves all the problems.
When purchasing a KVM, the choice is based upon the number of PCS to
be controlled by this switch. KVMs with few ports are convenient to use
without the need of installing of software. They can also be managed by
using hot keys and switch keys. KVMs equipped with only few ports do not
need external power supply.
It is important that a KVM switch ensures simulated keyboard and signals
reach each PC and that during switching there is no affect on the
PC’s CPU operation.
